First off, I just compiled my first kernel two days ago...I upgraded from 2.6.3-7mdk to 2.6.7. Then I quickly noticed that my zip and floppy failed to mount using supermount. Now, it's my understanding that supermount is a "kernel hack" and the prevailing thought is that automatic mounting should be done in the user space as opposed to the kernel space...and that is why supermount has been removed. I think Mandrake add this in their distribution. That in mind, I use magicdev for my CDRW and I turned on device icons in KDE so I can simply mount with a quick click. As a recent linux convert, I'm trying to only use non distribution specific tools. I guess using a solution like KDE just makes me desktop environment dependent but less distribution dependent! Anyway, that was how I handled this issue.
