Sudden loss of functionality on my graphical interface

Hi everyone!

I am a user of Mandriva Powerpack 2007 and I am now facing a serious problem that just showed up all of a sudden with my graphical interface. The problem is when I open windows (no, not Windows).

First the windows don't have a titlebar anymore and I can't move them around on the desktop with the mouse. Plus, when I open a window, there's no icon that appears on the panel. I can't maximize or minimize them since the titlebar is gone and if I want to close them I have to click on File -> Quit. When I open more than one window on the desktop, I can't alternate from one to the other because left-clicking on them does nothing; I can't get to the other windows as long as I don't close the last one that I opened. If for example I open Firefox (with Google as my home page), I can't go anywhere because I can't type anything in the address bar or in Google's search bar, even though I can select them with the mouse. Finally, I don't have 3D effects anymore and I can't reactivate them.

Everything used to work perfectly and I really don't know what caused this although I suspect something. I remember that the last time I did an update, compiz was among them. To update it, the manager had to install compositing-wm-common-2007-5mdv2007.0.i586 for dependencies but during the update, I was always getting a message that it had a problem with the recognition of the signature and so it couldn't update compiz. So I went to get the rpm package, I installed it and I could resume the update of compiz. This may have something to do with my problem but I'm really not sure.

Someone has any idea?

Thank you for your time

Yes your problem is to do with compiz, try the following:

Start configure your computer-->Hardware-->Configure 3D Desktop effects.

Disable 3D desktop effects, you will be told to log out (do so) then press Alt+Ctrl+Backspace, then select your environment (KDE, Gnome, etc) and log in as normal.

It is so simple that I really wonder why the hell I didn't think of that myself. But the important thing is now that the problem is solved. 3D effects are cool but it is true that they are quite useless.

Thank you Nexus!

Useless, maybe. Impressive, definately. Glad to be of service :-)
