Speedtouch..."The modem_run command failed"

Yes, it's another post about installing the Speedtouch 330 modem. It works fine on Win2k and now I'm trying to set it up on Mandrake 9.2.

I copied over alcaudsl.sys to the usr/share/speedtouch folder, and renamed it mgmt.o, for luck. In fact I have two versions of alcaudsl, one off the original Speedtouch CD which is v2.something and about 750k, and an update v3.something which is about 70k. I'm using the newer one on both systems at present.

I then tried the speedtouchconf utility, it seemed to load everything up OK, up to the modem test/lights flashing for 20 seconds part...and then this:

The modem_run command failed (code 242)
modem_run results:
Error in handle_endpoint_int (?) - Anyone able to explain this to Steve?

Running : pppd call adsl

****************************
* Don't seem to have connected. *
****************************

Please check the username and password in /etc/ppp/*-secrets

Then run /etc/rc.d/init.d/speedtouch start

Of course my login/password is correctly entered. Can't find any reference to this particular error so now I am well and truly stuck.

Any bright ideas?

Read this, it might help http://www.nemohackers.org/speedtouch.php and try the mgmt.o file in this tarball http://download.ethomson.com/download/speedmgmt.tar.gz
Are you using a 2.4 or 2.6 kernel?

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! I am online!!!

The older version of mgmt.o did the trick!

FWIW my kernel is 2.4.22 and I have the purple (burgundy?) colour modem, which is apparently revision 2 and not the silver v4 discussed in your first link. The speedtouchconf utility includes an option for this.

Thank you so much for that file! This has taken me a day and a half to sort out!
