Sound troubleshooting in 10.1

Hi,
I am experiencing problems getting sound to play in KsCD under Mandrake 10.1 Official. After having some problems burning using k3b I changed the settings for my cdrw to run under scsi emulation (added 'hdc=ide-scsi' to lilo.conf). My cdrw/rom settings are now (etc/fstab):

/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto mask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom3 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

Having performed this change I am unable to play sound using the cd devices. Any input on how can I troubleshoot my sound configuration?

You may also have a look at my previous post regarding k3b:

Cheers,
Mats.

Do you have alsa installed?

matsgl 12-18-2004 08:00 AM

I believe I do ('locate alsa' gives a long list..) but I have no experience of configuring it..

go to root console

#
Code:

#alsamixer
Configure your sounds as you want them to hear

Code:

#alsactl store
Enjoy your music;)

SlackerLX,
How do I change the settings for the sound functions that are disabled in alsamixer?

Specifically what should I be looking for seeing as the system sound is ok but there is no sound from cd devices?

Thanks,
M.

use arrows to increase or decrease
use m to enable or disable:study:
use ESC to exit

Hi,

Don't wany to disagree with SlackerX but each time I had a pb with sound with Mandrake( 10.0 or

10.1) I ran "alsaconf" in root console and that did it.

You could try it, it worked fine for me

SlackerLX 12-18-2004 08:20 AM

You could have tried saving you settings on alsamixer;)

Thanks for the previous posts!

SlackerLX, sorry for being silly - I found out how to use alsamixer just after posting the question..

samael26, I ran alsaconf and reconfigured my soundsystem, but still no sound from the cdrom... I checked the sound settings in KDE and realised that no audio device was selected, so I selected ALSA there. But again, no sound is coming from the cdrom?

Thanks,
mats.

So, Alsamixer helped or it did not. please let know. if still did not then why don't you check wire that connects CD and soundcard. maybe solution is that simple

Seems like running alsaconf helped after all - my speakers are alive now but the sound is very scratchy... Any ideas of what might cause the bad quality of the sound??

Mats.

It may just be a bad connection . Fiddle with the jack just a bit, to check if it's plugged allright.

Sometimes it's as simple as that

Hopes it helps

It would appear that my cdrw, which I set to run under scsi emulation had good sound but not my cdrom while still running in normal ide mode. Changing the config so that also the cdrom is set to scsi solved the problem and the sound is now good!

I will experient a bit more with the sound settings as it seems that setting the volume control very high on KsCD will lead to scratchy sound so it's a matter of finding a suitable combination of using the controls of the external speakers and the audio-playing application.

Thanks for your input!

Mats.
