sound problems in xfce4

Hi, I've been using mandrake 9.2 with KDE 3.1 and KDM. I recently switched to using xfce4 and logging in from the command line. In KDE the sound worked fine. With XFCE4 if I start KDM automaticly, then go to init 3, and start xfce4, sound works as well. but if I start xfce4 direct from command line, sound does not work. In the Drakconf util. ALSA is not listed as running, even though it is supposed to start at boot. when I click the "start service" button, nothing happens, and ALSA is still listed as stopped. I recieve no output in the terminal box below.
