Sound on a Dell Insperon 9100

Hey everyone. I am trying to help my bud out with an issue on his laptop. As I stated in the topic, it is a Dell Insperon 9100 and for some reason Mandriva won't configure sound off the bat during the install correctly. He has tried alsoconf, etc. but still no luck.

Other distros like Nopix and Fedora have set it up no problem. Any help here would be greatly appreciated on this.

Almost forgot it is Mandriva 2k5LE download eddition. That could always help huh...lol

I'm the person jchance is referring about with the above problem. I am a big time newbie when it comes to linux, so lets see if I can add a little more information about my setup so you may help me better.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 9100 with Mandrake 10.2 LE2005 installed. The sound card I'm having a problem with is an Intel 82801EB. The driver I'm currently using (which worked in fedora) is snd-intel8x0.

Let me know what other information you may need.

TIA

I found when on my Inspiron 9100 that for some reason some channels were muted. The only way I could unmute them was to run alsamixer, and unmute the "ext" channel (far right), the volume was then controlled by the PCM channel.

If you plug some headphones in, you may already be getting sound out on the headphone jack.

I had to install the alsa packages when I did this
