Please, be more informative. Tell us which sound card you're using, and which driver you're using. I would suggest using aumix and not kmix( it's given me lots of hassles).

Right, the cd is playing because the cable is plugged in so basically no software intervention is required.
As for your sound card, try switching to the OSS driver and also make sure the volumes are up (use aumix -q in terminal), as I said kmix has given me problems.

Hi
Try putting these voulmes in a file and save it as .aumixrc . Then open aumix and load the file (file -> load from).

vol:100:100:P
synth:0:0:P
pcm:100:100:P
speaker:100:100:R
line:0:0:P
mic:0:0:R
cd:100:100:P

Did you make sure the volume in xmms was up?

Ok, I as well am running Mandrake 10.0 (of course) and having the similar issues as beloncio. I am running and Intel810 w/snd-intel8x0. The problems i notice are these. Xmms will not play. (just freezes), im bout to recompile a version from the site. Gaim. the sound is laggy, for example i type and send the chat, then it takes five seconds or so to play, same as if some1 is sending me something. As for start up sounds during the kde load are fine, sound great. Games work greats (sound and video)
So im bout to do a little more diggin on this.

Beloncio, so you have no sound at all?

Just open kmix and slide the master bars up and down and try again.

I am also ahving similar problems with mandrake 10.0 community, xmms seems ot just crash when i try to play a file. my soundcard howeve ris not intel, i have soundblaster live 5.1 and i tend to use the emu10k1 drivers, and when i tried the snd-emu10k1 drivers i got a horrible annoying high pitched noise coming through the speakers. mplayer also will not play any sounds.

The version of XMMS bundled with mandrake 10 is kinda buggy. Just go to their webpage and install the new one (remember to uninstall the old one first!). All the dependencies are on the cd's so you don't have to download anything else.
