hello, im pretty new to linux and am currently downloading mandriva 10.2, i have seen alot of screenshots where linux looks very good with your computers performance, eg.. cpu, ram, hard drive, local temperature, weather and stuff like that transparent on the desktop and just general customizeation. excuse the spelling, but how do you do things like this, does it invlove programing or anything too complicated, ill be running mandriva later tonight hopefully and wouldnt mind having a go at it.
If you are going to use KDE, then you can check out Superkaramba, and there is the Karamba Section @ kde-look where you can get new "themes", everything from cpu info, mail notification to music control.
There are dozens and dozens of choices for these types of things.
But just to get you started, all of torsmo, superkaramba, gdesklets, and adesklets are capable of drawing cool displays on your background to do all sorts of tasks.
Also it's really easy to program new plugins if you can't find one that does what you want.
