Question small hard drive(s) - partition sizes

Hi everyone,

Im still pretty much a newb and need some feedback on partition sizes. I have done quite a bit of reading about them, however in todays age of large hard disks I need some feedback on my situation.
I would post this is the newb section, however since this system will be Mandriva I figured I would get better feedback here.

I will be installing Mandriva 10.2 on this system that was assembled from some older hardware:
1Ghz Pentium III
512MB RAM
3.2GB and 3.1GB hard drives

The system will mainly be used as a web server, but of course I will also be using it to continue learning the Linux OS and will be adding packages of interest. I do plan to use KDE and/or Gnome

With a total hard disk size of 6.2GB I have come up with this partitioning scenario:

hda @ 3.2GB
/ @ 500MB
/usr @ 2.7GB

hdb @ 3.1GB
swap @ 512MB
/home @ 850MB
/var @ 1GB
/tmp @ 879MB

The only problem I am having is knowing if these partition sizes will be adequate for the needs of the system, especially the root / @ 500MB as it will be hosting the remainder of the file system that has not been allocated to its own partitions.

Any feedback would be very welcome. Thanks!

Why are you partitioning at all? I usually just give the install a root "/" directory and it does the rest nicely.

Do you have a special need regarding the /home area?

As for 6gb, you shouldn't have too much of a problem except if you are trying to load everything from the install.

I suggest that you make only three partitions. Make all of the first drive the / partition and only create a swap and /home partition on the second drive.
