After installing SuSE 9, Mandrake 9.2, RedHat 9, Fedora Core1, and Slackware 9.1, my feeling is that Mandrake is the easiest to use for a Windows convert. It installed on both my IBM workstation and laptop with no errors. Good luck!

I am a X windows 98, recently changed to XP, user. I installed Mandrake 9.1.Mandrake has a great installer: no hard questions. AS easy (or easier becuse you dont have to muck about with serial codes) as installing Windows Xp. A word of advice: Expect to spend your first 2 days with mandrake mainly searching for packages to sastify dependices.
IMHO stay away from Red Hat. Starting in April 2004, they are no longer going to offer or support free download (in other words, you gotta pay to play). Good luck with SuSE YaST (should be called NaSTY), could not properly configure Samba or MTU = 1300. IMHO, Mandrake is the easiest to install and configure. I can now rip it out, and re-install the O/S and a bunch of Apps/Servers in under 10 minutes (windows cannot even come close). My wife prints through my main Mandrake box using Samba for her XP print services. Mandrake was just chosen over M$ windows and office by the Israeli government, that is a pretty good testimonial (they're not worried about security now are they?). I have done Hard drive, NFS, and FTP installs without pretty much even a hiccup.

Yeah, stay away from red hat, they have practically given Mandrake the home users market. Did you know that Red hat gives mandrake all their code to implement in mandrake? Red hat is focousing on the Corprate market.
