Set up HD as slave

I have 2 harddrives and I want to use one for storage. Mandriva sees it but how do I set it up?

I had Linux on it but removed the partitions in MCC. So, yes it's formatted.

Ok, so it's formated, but as what? ReiserFS?, ext2?, ext3?, something else?
Because, if it is just "formated", maybe no filesytem at all, mdriva will not allow you to access it.
Sorry if I am not making sence.

I guess it would be ext3 as I had Mandriva on it. What the deal was is I had Xandros and Mandriva dual boot. I decided to go with Mandriva exclusively so I tried to install it on that drive. I had a bunch of trouble so I just decided to use Mandriva on the other drive instead and make that one a slave. So I "cleared" it in MCC. I don't know if that erases it or wipes out just the partions.

WARNING! I only know about Fedora, but I believe this same info will work for you.

I have just been working on similar issues. The first thing you need to do is make sure the drive is partition. You can do this by using fdisk at the command line such as "fdisk DRIVE" where DRIVE is:

/dev/hda = Primary Master
/dev/hdb = Primary Slave
/dev/hdc = Secondary Master
/dev/hdd = Secondary Slave

After you run fdisk type in "p" to print a listing of the partitions, you should write this down for later reference. Then type in "q" to quit".

Then if it is partitioned it needs to be formatted. I'm betting it is already partitioned and formatted. If so then you just need to mount it. From the partition listing you can see the partitions, so lets assume you are using the first partition on the primary slave then you can try this:

mkdir /mnt/storage
mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/storage

then you can do a "df -hT" to see what type the mount is.

If the mount works then you will want to add it to the /etc/fstab file so that the storage will be mounted by itself the next time you boot the system.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to rename the drive I'm using to hda as it is hdb.
