Set incorrect monitor and now display doesn't work.

Yeah so I was dinking around with the monitor settings in an attempt to get my KVM over IP device working as there is no monitor in the list for it. So I was trying out different monitors in the list to see if one would work better then the other, next thing I know, no display. I've hooked it up to three monitors trying to get a picture and nothing.

I can still SSH into the box, so I was wondering what file stores this information so taht I might change it back to a default monitor. Or any other way of correnting my goof.

kill the X server by pressing CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE
then run xorgconfig to setup Xserver again, or just edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the monitor display section.

Assuming that you mean that you cannot load the GUI then:

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 depending on whether you're running XOrg or XFree86.

Look in Section "Monitor", which look like this:

Since You're editing outside of any wizards the important thing is to vary the HorizSync and VertRefresh parameters. You've probably set the upper limits too high.

If the error is on a file associated with the KVM switch please ignore this post!

You might want to connect a monitor directly to the computer to check out whether the config file needs changing.

Thanks a bunch for the help! I put the generic values in the xorg.conf and was able to get back into the XServer. Now I just need to experiment with the refresh rates to find one that the KVM likes.

And devcefai, I was hooking it directly up to monitors, the KVM was the first thing I removed from the equation. Thanks for your help!
