seeking advice on what processes to start at boot.
hi,
i read a post that complained mdk boots slowly, and a response asked to post the output of 'ps aux.' so i think my system boots slowly, and so i post my 'ps aux' here. my system is a laptop. i don't need it to be any kind of server: print, mail, web... what can i do? thanks. Could you provide us with the boot log? I'm not familiar with Mandrake but check /var/log/boot or /var/log/syslog
|
hi,
the two files are too long, so i post them here. 2 questions though: why are they only root-readable? and i took a look at boot.log and saw 'stopping alsa' multiple times. why is that? syslog: http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs9e-1cx/syslog boot.log: http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs9e-1cx/boot.log thanks. |
From the looks of your logs, I am guessing you recently upgraded your kernel from 2.4 to 2.6. I'm seeing tons of kernel errors or misconfiguration...I'm not quite sure where to start. Is this a new Mandrake install or did you attempt a kernel upgrade? If its a new install I would definitely consider compiling your own kernel...I see you use Slack so you're probably not clueless in that area, though I can help you if you want.
|
hi,
i installed mdk with its 2.6.3 kernel. then i compiled and used the 2.6.5 kernel. when i compiled the bzImage and the modules i did see a lot of warnings. anyway could you elaborate on this, "If its a new install I would definitely consider compiling your own kernel." i am willing to reinstall mdk any time if it makes my system better, faster, and cleaner (i think i must have done that at least 20 times in the last few months. i tried to use slackware but was never able to resolve a problem with the terminal (when X is not running) flickering (i think it's a problem with the intel graphics driver because at boot time i see error messages concerning .../drivers/video/intelfb.go of something like that). thanks. |
Well if reinstallation does not bother you, I can assure you Slackware will cause less problems. Regarding the video problem in the console, does this occur during Slackware install when booting from the CD, afterwards when booting from the hard drive, or both?
|
it's kind of neither. ok so install and booting into the console are fine; however, i startx, exit (which shuts down x) and back to the console, from now the problem occurs.
|
Interesting...yes, the problem is definitely driver or kernel related...I too have had a very similar issue with the TV-Out function of my GeForce2 MX/400 video card. However, I never tried upgrading the kernel to 2.6x on my Slackware install. I am on Gentoo right now, using the 2.6 kernel though, and I haven't seen the problem yet. Though, the problem occured at random before...sometimes it would screw up the console and sometimes it wouldn't...hopefully it doesn't from now on, but anyways, it's worth a try if it fixes a very good distro. Other than that, you may want to try Gentoo if you have a decent Internet connection.
Just thought of something....if the 2.6x kernel does the same thing, you could probably fix it by installing bootsplash with the VESA driver and change you console resolution to 1280x1024 or something high. |
my lcd display only goes up to 1024x860.
what's the vesa driver? |
For the mdk boting slowly prob. Did you try disabling al unneeded services started at boot?
