Screen "Out of Range"

I know this has been asked several times, and I looked through them, but none of the answers help me. All the previous answers assume an ability to see the desktop.

I have moved my box to my workplace and the monitor here is older than the one I have at home and it doesn't like the settings I have for screen size / refresh rate. It will run through the boot-up, but when it gets to around the point where KDE would boot up, it blanks out and dispalys the message "Out of Range". I know what I would do, if I could see the desktop, but since I can't see anything on the desktop to change it, how do I go about changing it?

I have been successful in booting into failsafe mode and having access to my files, but other than that, I have no idea where to go or what to do from there.

I figure I need to change some config file somewhere, but don't know where to look or how to change it. I have zero access to any programs that I would normally use to change it. Save for possibly emacs.

A better solution for me would to be able to add some extra boot command that will affect it for that boot only, so I can use it when I want to bring my box to work. Kind of like a tag I run at boot-up, but I see no place where I would be able to enter it and boot it up.

I also have at my disposal a Knoppix CD so I can get to and edit certain files if I absolutlely need to, but still have no idea what file to change.

Thank you for your help.

Running Mandrake 10 with KDE.

Normally boot your system, when KDE starts, press CTRL+ALT+F1, now you'll be in console. After that, edit file /etc/X11/XF86Config or xorg.conf.

In Section "Monitor" change refresh values to correct range.
