scanner setup hangs
can't seem to get my scanner to work. mostly using gui
as am a newbie.
umax astra 1220s (scsi)
mandrake download 9.2
no updates
using mandrake control center---->hardware---->scannerdrake
fails to detect scanner. if i use scannerdrake to set up
scanner manually a small "please wait" window hangs on
my screen. the system still works but this screen hangs.
at first didn't realize it was the scanner setup. had
tried setup and assumed it had worked but xsane froze.
i'm now assuming that the xsane freeze is due to the
improperly detected scanner.
here's a detailed account of what i've tried:
on booting computer the bios seems to properly recognize the scsi scanner as scsi id5 (i also have a scsi cdwriter properly seen as scsi id6)
once kde is up i look at the mandrake control center and harddrake which shows:
umax astra 1220s on port /dev/sg0
it says the scanner is available to my system thgrough xsane
close harddrake and control center
start xsane (v0.91). it opens showing a window for "standard options astra 1220s: generic". at the bottom of the window, in umax typeface in big letters is the word umax. the options are as follows:
under scan mode bind x and y resolution is selected.
negative is not selected.
under enhancement the bit depth is set to 8
quality calibration is selected
use custom gamma table is selected
in the preview window i click "acquire preview" and the button grays.
the program appears frozen. i wait five minutes before i click the "cancel preview" button. nothing happens and the "acquire preview" button remains grayed. if i click the corner to close one of the four xsane windows nothing happens. if i bring one of the windows that has been behind another to the front it does not draw properly. the areas that were behind the other window remain gray, although the window is clearly in the front now. i cannot quit xsane.
i log out and back in as the same user. on bringing up kde a search for scanners is started (presumably because xsane was never properly quit?). a dialog box appears stating "no devices available". i click ok and xsane does not restart.
i open the control center again and harddrake. normally when i open harddrake there is a brief pause and then i get a dialog saying "please wait: detection in progress." after a second and while the dialog box is still up the mouse begins jumping around. i assume this to have to do with its being detected. on this post xsane freeze second time through harddrake the mouse never jumps and the detection process appears frozen. i wait five minutes before closing the control center window (which does close but the detection dialog box remains open).
i log out and back in as the same user. on bringing up kde i am asked for my root password (presumably because the detection was never exited). i cancel.
i reopen the control center and scannerdrake this time. this time no scanners are found (remember i have not rebooted, only logged out and back in). i click on search for scanners. no scanners are found. i add one manually and configure it to /dev/sg0. i get a message that it is available to the system through xsane.
i click search again to see if it shows up but again i get the message that no scanners are found. i add it again manually and again configure it and again get a message that it is available to the system through xsane.
i exit scannerdrake and the control center. i start xsane and again get the message that no scanners are available. i click ok and xsane does not start.
i turn off the computer. i restart the computer. as with my original boot process, harddrake now shows the scanner. all of the above processes repeat identically.
i give up.
here's my lilo.conf:

here's my fstab file:

if i go to /dev i find a file sg0. if i try to open it in kedit i get
the message "the specified file does not exist". i did not try this as root.
thanks for your patience with all of this info,
