HI, Iam a newbee. Using Mandrake 10.1 Community. Have dual boot install with XP and use grub. Everything runs smoothly...except for internet speed and download speed using Linux. Win connection runs at 512 but in Lin runs at much less about ten times less (this is using a Cable Modem SB5100 Surfboard Motorola). Eth0. (Ethernet card PCI Intel) PentiumIII 1ghz, 256Krom. I am satisfied with the distro but have been trying to update the programs and the speed of the downloads is not what i have expected. . . I have read many forums everywhere but have not found anything helpful even with Google searches...pls help!

Does this speed decrease only occur when you are trying to update the programs online?

What speed/s were you expecting?

Typically slower speeds are usually related to either slow DNS queries or MTU errors.

Also if IRQ & DMA handling is not correct things will be slow....


Have you?

Edited /etc/sysconfig/harddisks and uncommented all of the indicated lines?

Removed any reference to ACPI=HT in /etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo then rebooted?

The speed goes down from 512K to less than 3K always in every type of situation downloading pages to programs, i have not tried updating anything yet due to this slowness, i go back to my windows partition and use firefox there to download anything i want to copy in linux, but it is frustrating to be logging on and off again just for the speed of the connection...thanks for your prompt reply(post #2).
