I have just installed Mandriva 2008, and whilst I can login in as root to authenticate myself in the configuration utility (on the tray), I am denied the option to login when signing into a session. I think it is in consequence to this I get an error message when trying to extract files in Arc (something to the effect of not being on the right PATH), and perhaps the reason when I try to consult the Help menu, non of the documents are available (glah!)
su is the command to change to the root user in a terminal, and sudo allows you to run programs as a root user. Running as the root user is generally discouraged unless you're doing system administration.
as stated earlier it is highly discouraged to login as root even in the terminal.it is highly dangerous to start a new session as root since committing any mistakes in that session will affect ur machine.so better dont try login as root in a gui session.i think mandriva doesn't allow such logins.

Even if it is possible to login as root the GUI will hide for you a lot messages
So you did not know what is really happening
I agree it is a bad habit to login as root using the GUI
And if you always use the GUI you will never learn the Linux commands , even not the most used commands
