Resolving DNS Queries, HTTP Server Configuration
 

Ok, I've got two problems here...

First, I've set up my dns server in mandrake, and it seems to resolve two or three queries then quit, if I change the dns server (ISP has three) then it works for about three, then quits, then I change it, it quits... etc. No problems like this with other computers (running RH9, W2K, WXP, W98). Tried setting iptables INPUT\OUTPUT policies to ACCEPT and flushing iptables, no help.

Second question, is it safe to edit the httpd.conf file in mandrake? I figured since the OS was so user friendly (too user friendly, if you ask me) there would be some sort of GUI admin or something that might overwrite it. Also, which one do I edit, I have one in /etc/httpd/conf/ and one in /etc/httpd/2.0/conf? (This is a fresh 9.2 install.)

As for the DNS server, I cant help you there

For apache, I would just edit the httpd.conf file manualy. I like the feel of being able to do it myself. If you really want a GUI for it, I'm sure there are a few out there you could download, but it will probably override any manual changes you've made. As long as you dont run the gui admin, it cant do anything, and when you do run it it will probably prompt you before it erases your settings. I would go with the one in /etc/httpd/conf/. Thats the default for most apache versions. You can always try changing something in there and then see if it works. If nothing happens, use the one in /2.0/

For DNS: do you have any logs?

For httpd: I think I would edit the httpd.conf manually. However, you might stick with manual editing afterwards, since a badly-written gui might overwritte your manual changes.
