LinuxQuestions.org - reinstalled X86Free, now Im getting a gray Failsafe screen

Ok X windows has been running slow so I have been trying just about everything to speed it up... More memory, new video card, verified the right drivers were installed, tweaked the HD, etc. the only other suggestion was to reinstall Xfree86. First try I put 4.4.0 on not knowing it wasnt compatible with the driver, but I went back tried 4.3.0 and things are going a little better but Im still having so many problems I dont know where to begin.

First thing.... it boots to a gray screen (1280x1024) with a rectangle menu giving me a few failsafe options. I dont know what its for but I somehow cancel out of it and I get to the mandrake splash screen but I cant use the keyboard to type in my password.

any suggestions?

if I boot to a command prompt and type startx it looks like it loads me into the first version of X ever... but the mouse and keyboard works... so now
I type startkde and 'boom', it lets me into KDE but its all messed up and still has the really old XTerm windows. not to mention the drivers dont work right

UPDATE:
I reinstalled XFree86 for the XX time and this time I decided to look in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log and one of the first lines I see is: Could not load the shared library file for Glide: "libglide2x.so"!

So thats where I am now.. I will keep you updated... if you care :D
