Unhappy Read-only file system error during bootup after installing Mandrake ontop of Suse

Hi, I need some help please!
I just tried to install Mandrake 9.2. I used a partition that had Suse on it. Setup was completed and everything seemed fine (all devices recognized) until I was asked to boot the system. Now I get several errors while Mandrake is trying to boot, most of them being read-only file system.

The first failed I get goes like this:
Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode: mount:/ not mounted already, or bad option [failed]
activating swap partitions: [ok]
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 453: /etc/mtab: Read-only file system

If left for about 5 mins, booting continues and then I get a character login (no gui)

Don't know if this makes a difference but I installed from cd's that came with a new HP pc.

Anyone have any ideas?
