raid 1, kernel 2.6.12, reiserfs superblock?

I have recently upgraded one of my boxes from mandrake 10.1 to mandrake 2006. This obviously upgraded the kernel modules.
I kept the old kernel boot images just in case.
we have 2 raid devices md0, md1 + the boot partition. On the new kernel version 2.6.12 when I boot up it tells me that md1 superblock is corrupt & needs to be rebuild (md1 is not a bootable device as all it contains is /var) so I told it to rebuild the superblock on the raid device but it doesn't seem to do anything, next time we boot, same message.

On the old kernel (version 2.6.3-7) both devices mount fine & work correctly).
Anyone got any ideas how the fix this problem?

config files are below:

/etc/mdadm.conf
