Mandrake 9.2 had a buig with the menu, so you need to update your system to get all the fixes. You can even go one step further and get Mandriva 2006 because 9.2 is now a bit dated.

You start the Mandriva Control Center go to the software section and look for an icon for updates. To use 2006, then it would be better to reinstall from scratch.

Mandrake is now Mandriva. As for software, ther is lots in the mandriva repositories and you get get the instructions at easyurpmi. You need to setup the main, contrib, updates and plf repos then use rpmdrake (the software module) to search for and install software.
