Problems logging in as root user mdk 9.1

Hello!

I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 (9.2 is on the way) on my desktop PC. The problem is, the installation did not detect my ATI Radeon 9600 as a display adapter. I have downloaded the new drivers from the ATI website, but they require a root user to unpackage the rpm. I have a root password because when I change the date and time, Mandrake asks for the password and I type it in correctly. However, when I go to the log on screen, there is no root user to log on with. There is only the user I created for myself. I used to have Mandrake 9.1 on a laptop I sold a few months ago and I was allowed to type in the user I wanted to log on as, including root. Is there something I'm missing? I'm wanting to watch some DVD's and try the demo for Unreal Tournament 2003, but no display adapter to do such things is installed. Thanks for the help!

Type in root.

Though you have no need to be in a graphical desktop as root to install the drivers. Its both unsafe and un-network safe.

Try just opening a command line terminal su-ing to root and installing the driver.
