Problems Installing AIM (MDK 10.0)

I'm pretty much as new as you can get to Linux..just installed MDK 10.0 today. I'm having AIM installation problems: I've downloaded the .rpm file. I open it from the download window with "Software Installer" and I get a prompt box:

Box 1:
You are about to install the following software package on your computer:

/var/tmp/kdecache-aaron/krun/3895.0.aim-1.5.286-1.i386.rpm

You may prefer to just save it. What is your choice?

Install it Save File

When I click install it...I get another box:

Box 2:
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed (4 MB):
aim-1.5.286-1.i386
libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.83mdk.i586

Is this OK?

After I click ok on box 2

My cd tray opens and another box comes up with the message: Please insert the medium named "Installation CD 4 (x86) " on device [/dev/hdc] . I don't know what to do from here, please help.

Thanks, Aaron

yes, use gaim.

anyway, to answer your question, use gaim.

you simply canoot install aim as you dont ahve disc 4. disc 4 only comes with the version of mandrake that you pay for. you might be able to get it off the net, but its not worth the hassle. use gaim.

lol just tried to download and install gain...a message box says:

Some package requested cannot be installed:
gaim-1.0.3-0mdk10.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libplds4.so)
do you agree ?

I've done some more in depth research and I think that libplds4.so will come if I install Mozilla....which is what I'm doing now.

Downloaded Mozilla and i have the "unsatisfied" file now, but I still get the same message. Help please .

Rule 1 with linux distros, if they have a package manager use it. Package managers save a lot of stress compared to dependency problems resulting from just installing rpms or compiling by source.

I don't use Mandrake and am not that familiar with it but I believe their manager is urpmi. Try checking that out and installing gaim through it.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Mandrake forum and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Run the Mandrake source manager (don't know its name in version 10) and remove cd 4 from the sources list. Then, if you don't have online sources add one (if you want urpmi download packages automatically to satisfy dependencies). Then it should stop asking about cd 4 and download the packages from the mirror you provided (or ask for the previous cds).

Gawd I'm a broken record on this subject...

BEFORE you do ANYTHING ELSE

Go into the "Software Media Manager" and remove any disks that you do not have on hand, or bettery yet remove ALL of the CD's!

Then exit out and go to this site:

http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html

Follow the directions for setting up your URPMI sources.

Do this as ROOT!

Once done merely type

urpmi gaim

and everything will be taken care of for you.

You can also change to the directory where you downloaded that file and type

urpmi aim*.rpm

and let it work it's magic.

Note once the prompt comes back wait a few minutes as Linux churns away in the background updating the menus to reflect any changes.

AFTER you have done all of this, go into the "INSTALL SOFTWARE" gui and you'll find a treasure trove of new software which is now available to you.

All of this software can be installed my merely putting checkmarks in front of what you want, and there is a LOT of great stuff including AIM clients like GAIM and Kopete (which supports AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. messengering services at the same time!).

Use rpmi, go to easy-rpmi and do the auto--select thing, then in the media manager check those sources and un-check the cd's. Then do a urpmi gaim and let it go to work. I installed aim and it figured out the dependencies and downloaded the required packages and all is well.

Package "libgtkspell0-2.0.3-5mdk" is inside one of the mandrake 3 discs, install it first via "system / configuration / packaging / install software ", then you will be able to install your gaim.
