Unhappy Problems after downloading updates

OK, for almost a month now, I've had Mandrake 9.2 installed and working flawlessly (almost) with the exception of being able to connect to the internet. That problem was today finally resolved (refer to this thread .

You can imagine how pleased I was and so was eager to download the updates released so my system would be 100% up to date. I went through the automatic update procedure and downloaded every package that came up on the list successfully. It was after doing this that things have gone sour

For some reason, I can't access any programs. I click on the KDE 'Start' button and what was once a menu listing lots of applications, games, OpenOffice, Konsole, Konqueror etc etc. is now a list of virtually nothing!!

Even the CDROM and Floppy icons cannot access their respective drives when clicked on.

And the 'Welcome' screen icons don't react when clicked on - I tried the 'Configure your computer icon' (the one with the red spanner) and an error came up.

What have I done wrong? Will I have to start fresh by wiping the partition clean and re-installing Mandrake??!! HHHEEEELLLLPPPP!!

I have seen a number of references to this problem. You need to run the update menu command. This may be of help.

XavierP is quite right!

Run a shell, run the command "update-menus -v" (less quotes!)

This is known flaw in 9.2, but the fix isn't too painful...

OK. Thanks for the info. It took me a while to work it out, though. Basically I couldn't open the text console because there was no menu in KDE. I didn't have GNOME installed so I tried logging in under IceWM - the menus were unaffected there. I was able to open the text console under IceWM and type in the command you suggested there. This restored the menus and icons in KDE.

Cheers
