Problem installing Midnight Commander

I downloaded the Mandrake RPM version of Midnight Commander, but when I tried to install it, *nothing* happened. I am running Gnome..is there a possibility it will not install with Gnome? Thanks.

MC comes on your 9.1 disks. Open a terminal, su to root, then type urpmi mc - you should be asked for one of the CDs, pop it in and press enter. That should be it. Then type mc in the terminal to make sure it's working.

Unhappy Midnight Commander

Carlywarly:: Thanks for quick reply. Somethings not right. I su, then urpmi mc. Then it comes up with 'need to install dependency' then asks: (Y/n)?

When I enter y or Y [or just Return].... nothing happens! It just stalls.

Never gets to asking for CD.

I am running Gnome.

Carlywarly: Thanks for the latest tip. I re-booted to KDE and succesfully installed mc via the MCC. So go figure. I think I read somewhere that mc doesn't support Gnome now.... or something like that.

It's pathetic that Midnight Commander in MDK 9.1 has been excluded from default installation. What a "terrible economy" of space... NOT, it is small program. MC has been present in previous MDK distributions up to 9.0 inclusively. Certainly there has been not a single word about that in Mandrake list of changes made from 9.0 to 9.1. I do not remember anybody asking about MC exclusion idea on Club pages or elsewhere. It was made secretly in the "best traditions" like communist states did. Whoever made this decision - please publish your name and URL to photo, I want to look into your eyes!

It is still possible to mark mc to be installed during installation process. But mc will be missing in most beginners installations because they are afraid to change anything in defaults. However all windows users accustomed to FAR program would greatly benefit from MC as it has almost the same interface.

In my humble opinion MC should be re-included in default installation list.

The Midnight Commander scandal

Well said hbush, normally I hate "me too" messages but I was astonished when MDK left out Midnight Commander.

When I was a total newbie trying to run Linux from the command line I was getting nowhere fast until I heard about the magic mc command.

I do hope that it will reappear in 9.2
