Unhappy Problem Installing Graphics Card

Hi!

I am new to Linux and Mandrake. I have been trying now for two days to configure my PC (IBM ThinkPad 390X) with mandrake 10.1 and KDE and it does not work ;-(

My graphics card is a NEOMAGIC MAGIC MEDIA 256AV.

On the last confirmation page in the installation (the one with the summary of all parameters) the graphics card appears as Not configured, then I tried to configure it manually selecting Magic Media (laptop+notebook) and Magic media 256 XL, but for both actions I get same response [Can't install Xorg package:]

I tried also to configure from Xorg/VESA selection but it gives me same response

Anyone Can help me out??

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for replying!

It actually only said [can't install Xorg package:], nothing more....

Now I logged in and after entering the login and password,

the prompt is at [pepe@localhost pepe]$

when I try to input

startx

It says

-bash: startx: command not found

Any tips??

Thanks!

Hi again!

I have tried several times and did not get any errors until the point of the not configured graphics card that says that cannot install the Xorg package.

I am installing the packages through FTP. Is there anyway I can ensure that that specific package is installed??

Now the promt tells me startx is not a command, Am I at a different shell level than I should??

Thanks!

Did you install in the gui or from console?
What packages are you installing?

Hi again!

I installed from the graphics interface.

At the beginning, I included the server packages but as I was having problem, the last 2 times I selected the default packages and still the graphics card was not auto-configured~

The FTP of the mini-ISO and the FTP of the download while installing is not the same (mine was not in the list). Should it have any relation?

also, it is not possible to come back to the configuration of the X, download of packages if needed from the login shell??

Thanks!

If you know the packages you need to install use the console as root and type 'urpmi package-1 package2' and so on.

Second the only way to configure the graphics display is in the mandrake control center. Have you done that?

If so do it again and type as root in console 'tail -f /var/log/syslog' and paste what you get here.

I will try to reinstall once more,

I will copy all the problems in the configuration summary screen,

I have not idea on how to access to mandrake control center, can you please let me know how to get some info?

It worked!

I finally could configure the video card and got through...I did an update instead of an installation and downloaded X11 packages, which I guess solved the problem.

Now I do not have KDE interface but Ice VM, How can I change it???

Thanks!

urpmi kde

as root

if it say everything installed then edit ~/.desktop and change the DESKTOP to DESKTOP=KDE

of just make sure your in your own directory and type 'echo DESKTOP=KDE > .desktop'

that will make KDE your default desktop
