pppd died error code 10

Hello , i am using Mandrake linux 9.2 download edition and i have
a Us Robotics 56k external serial modem.
When trying to connect to internet i got this message

pppd deamon died error code 10
and at the log i see this :

Feb 22 04:59:33 localhost pppd[2529]: pppd 2.4.1 started by nikos, uid 501
Feb 22 04:59:33 localhost pppd[2529]: using channel 3
Feb 22 04:59:33 localhost pppd[2529]: Using interface ppp0
Feb 22 04:59:33 localhost pppd[2529]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tts/0
Feb 22 04:59:33 localhost pppd[2529]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x1abe099c> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb 22 04:59:36 localhost pppd[2529]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x1abe099c> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Feb 22 05:00:04 localhost pppd[2529]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Feb 22 05:00:04 localhost pppd[2529]: Connection terminated.
Feb 22 05:00:04 localhost pppd[2529]: Exit.

What goes wrong ? I have previously used the modem with Mandrake 9.1 and all went ok , till one day when this message appeared , i thought it was time to upgrade Mandrake with 9.2 but problem still exists ...

Thanks in advance

type in a shell: man pppd
It's a long file but explains a lot and gives the error codes near the end. (You probably know this already, but to get out of a man page, type q )

10 The PPP negotiation failed, that is, it didn't reach the point
where at least one network protocol (e.g. IP) was running.

Hope this helps,

Siri Amrit

Yeah i have read that on the man page but can't help me.
I thought that trying wvdial instead of kppp might be a solution,,,,
but it is now , when type , wvdial , (i have the wvdial.conf configured )
i get NO DIAL TONE message
