Also... might I suggest picking a title that is a bit more descriptive next time.
"Missing java pluging for Mozilla" or "Mozilla Java program not found on Mandriva 10.0" might be good choices.
That's right - blame Sun for this. Mandriva has Java RPMs in their club and powerpack commercial repos. If you're not a club member then just get it from java.sun.com and follow the instructions there about making a symlink in the mozilla plugins directory.
Yeah I had a whinge about this a while back - its very annoying
and I downloaded it and made all the symbolic links and it still didn't work
Grrrrrrrr
however I got a DVD Mandrake 10.1 Community and that had it - yay
but it had other problems like the printer wizard being disabled
and it wont shutdown properly and power-off
Grrrrrrr
So I'm waiting to see what 2005 LE is like
Sacre Bleu I just wish Mandrake would just get it right
I dont want bleeding edge I just want a distro that works
I really like Mandrake 10.0 Official
it is just missing Java ( and SuperTux )
and Zack
Suse 9.2 has Java on the CD / DVD ( but not as many games )
Xandros 3.0 community has it
as far as I'm aware there are no legal issues with Java
so its not Sun's fault
Its Mandrake / Mandriva's fault
There are legal issues with it in that its not open source and therefore cannot be distributed on the freely distributable discs for Linux distros.
However the licence does allow redistribution so there's nothing stopping Mandrake from packaging it up and putting it on a seperate 'commercial apps' disk, which is what they've done. Only thing is they're reserved it for the club members and pay-for box versions - after all they've got to have something to add value for these services.
If you do an
Code:
about: plugins
in firefox address bar what does it show? (Remove the spaces between the 'about' and the colon and the 'plugins' this stupid forum kept trying to turn the colon p into a smiley face even though its in a CODE block )
but how come the Suse 9.2
and Xandros 3 disks I got, had Java
and yet were free
The Mandrake 10.1 disks I got were free
and had Java but as I said that was a community version
and buggy in other areas ( Grrrrr )
and yet 10.0 official didnt have it
and Java is freely available on magazine disks
for windows
to me this situation doesn't make a lot of sense
thats why I said
I'm waiting for 2005LE
I can understand what you are saying about Java
not being open source
but it is freely available, for the price of a magazine
Floppy: the download version of Mandriva should be pure GPL, according to Mandriva. Since Java is not GPL, it is not included. Otherwise, what tkedwards said is right on.
Thanks Padma
that sheds a little light
next Q
obviously
The distros I bought were obviously download versions
( they were only a couple of bucks )
but the other distros were off the covers of magazines
can we assume that they were not the download versions
I know one magazine ( linux user I think ) has the full
suse 9.2 pro DVD ( 32 & 64 bit ) but with all the commercial stuff
taken out, so would that then be what the magazines are doing ... ?
I guess the moral of the story
is dont pay for a download version even if it is only a couple of bucks
if you want Java ...
and EWT3Y
you would have been e-mailed when your thread was moved unless you have that feature disabled in your settings, its an automatic thing.
