Thumbs down OpenOffice is taking ages to load

hi,
i am using Mandriva Free 2007 on Toshiba Satellite 2.0 Ghz (Centrino) laptop with 512 MB memory. The problem i am facing is that openoffice takes a long time to load. I have to wait for upto 1-2 minutes before the application actually starts. I dont have any such problems with Other software or with microsoft office on Windows XP Sp2 (i am dual booting).
Is there some way to speed up the open office startup time??? Its not really much usefull if i have to wait for upto 2 mins just to start up the application.

Thnx

I can't tell the exact cause of the problem, but if an application takes this long to start, it usually means that it is waiting for something that is not available, and refuses to start before the request for that resource times out. This _might_ be network related.

Along the same line...I just installed Mandriva 2007 and had problems opening the word processor module of OpenOffice so I used the Mandriva controlcenter to uninstall it and tried to reinstall. Unfortunately, now the Control Center will not do it.

Any suggestions or instructions on how to reinstall from the Mandriva 2007 disk?

When you say the control center does not allow you to reinstall the openoffice you mean u get an error msg or you cant access the files for openoffice???

Try using Urpmi with the name of the rpm file.

Reloading OpenOffice

When I try to reinstall from the control center, Mandriva looks to the internet mirror site to download again -- I just wnat to start OpenOffice from the 2007 disk again since I only have dial-up.

If you have the installation disk with you then put it in the drive. Go to "Configure your system" --> Software Management--> add /remove software sources (some thing i like i dont remember exactly)or some thing like add/remove where you install software fromm.....lol

and see if sources other than the installtion disk are present. Uncheck all other sources. Now when u try to any thing, mandriva would only check the installtion disk.

Now go to remove/install software and remove and then reinstall openoffice.

This should work.

Before I start ripping packages from my system, I would try one of the quick start utilities intended for Open-Office-dot-org. If you have Open-Office-dot-org-two you should use either openoffice.org-ooqstart-2.0.4-2.1mdv2007.0.i586 or oooqs2-1.0-1mdv2007.0.i586

The first is the internal quick start package from Open-Office-dot-org and the other is a kde quick start package for Open-Office-dot-org.

If you have Open-Office-dot-org-one-dot-x, you may get better performance from the newer version ...

HTH,
