NVIDIA Drivers

I have Gforce 2 ultra Graphic card. I did a clean install today, then followed this article to install the drivers. Everything went ok. One thing I deviated is after booting in to failsafe I switched to runlevel3, because when I tried to install the driver it said there might be problems doing it in runlevel1.
When I rebooted instead of going to gui it dumped me to the text mode. Even thought it says it was at runlevel 5. I saw a line something init something runlevel 5.
What a heck is going on? I followed the directions, installed the correct source code.
I'm running Mandrake 10.0 with 2.6.3-7mdk kernel. I insalled all the updates before installing the source code.
I installed the source code when I was in gui, using the Mandrake install, or something like that.
Thx.

Runlevel 1 is the equivalent of "safe mode" in windows. It means you can't do squat as far as X goes. Runlevel 3 is text, and 5 is gui.

The most likely reason it dumped you into text, is simply that you didn't configure it correctly. You should check /etc/x11/XF86Config(-4)

(the -4 is optional on some systems)

make sure you're configured with the "nvidia" drivers, and whatever else the Readme suggests. I've been using them for a while now, with now real problems (sometimes things are a little off, but that's different from installs and getting them running.)

I edited the XF86Config-4, like I was suppose to. Added the load "glx", added that option.
There are also a XF86Config file there and XF86Config.old. First one doesn't have anything in it. And I don't think second one effects anything, right?

When I try startx I get an error message
Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialzie the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II)UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II)Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ibvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
Anyone has any idea whats going on or at least a sudgestion on how to get back to using the generic drivers that did work?
Thx.

Ok... since there are no replies about that how about this.
I want to just reinstall Mandrake ... again. But this time I want to keep my existing partitions. It gives me an option to format /, /usr, /var, /home. Should I format them all or can I get away with just formatting /, and /usr. What would be the consequencies of me doing it?
Thx.
