Nvidia driver screws up command prompt

I've got a problem with mandrake 9.2. It was working great, but then I felt the need to play some games. So I installed the Nvidia driver with their automatic installer, and updated my xf86config-4 file. I also installed the rpms for mesaGL and glut. My problem is this: when I exit X to go back to the command line, it gets all screwy. The screen is filled with a lot of white noise, and in the background you can see a large oversized command prompt. obvisouly this is not good, because I cannot see what I am typing, and am relegated to only using the command prompt for logining in, out, and halting the system. Does anybody out there know how to fix this or have had the same problem? Could this have anything to do with the funky background image that 9.2 loads when you use the command line?

Does it do this with all terminals or have you tried using different terminals? I have never had this problem.

Hi,

This is a fairly well known problem with the Nvidia Drivers. I suffered it off and on for 6 months its a real pain. There is a long-ish thread over at Nvidia Linux forums detailing possible solutions for this. (I think it has been mentioned here as well once or twice).

Anyway the solution that worked for me was to use the framebuffer in Lilo and set it to a high(ish) resolution of 1024x768. Nothing lower worked. My friend had the same issue but he got away with 800x600. Give it a try and experiement a little. You might find it easier to set Lilo to 'ask on boot' so you can choose diff options and see if you can find one that works.

Oh BTW there are also some reported problems with X once the framebuffer driver is loaded, easy enough to disable it if you do have trouble but just so you know.

How to set ? Go into MCC (MDK Control Centre) -> Boot -> DrakBoot - > Lilo/Grub Mode - >Configure -> Advanced. It's in the drop down.

Luck
