Nvidia 6800 Issues

Alright so I finally got the OS up and going yet I am still having issues. I am attempting to install my Graphics card driver that I downloaded from Nvidia. So I try to install from the GUI, the installer didn't like that much and told me I couldn't do it under X server. So I booted into failsafe mode and tried again. Nope couldn't do that either. Something about run this as a level 3 something telinit 3. So I type in that command and the shell reboots.

I attempt to install one more time and this time is says it can't find the appropriate kernal interface and needs to download one. I say ok. It then says It can't find one on the FTP site either. I read the readme file for the driver located here

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...676/README.txt

and it said this

Quote:
If 'nvidia-installer' must compile a kernel interface for your kernel, you
will need the required support files installed on your system. On most
systems, this means that you will need to locate and install the correct
kernel-source or kernel-headers package; on some newer distributions, no
additional packages are required (e.g. Fedora Core 3, Red Hat Enterprise Linux
4).

Note that linking of the kernel interface (in the case that the interface was
downloaded or compiled at installation) requires you to have a linker
installed on your system. The linker, usually '/usr/bin/ld', is part of the
binutils package. If a precompiled kernel interface is not found, you must
install a linker prior to installing the NVIDIA driver.
My question now is where do I find the correct kernel-source packages?

Hi BlackJackal,

Frustration over installing Nvidia drivers is fairly common, but once you have done it a few times it's really not very hard at all.

Here's a link to an excellent install guide for your driver.
http://www.linuxloader.com/modules.p...howpage&pid=17

All of your questions should be answered including where to get your kernel source package.

Cheers

Ok, just had a quick look at the link I gave you and it doesn't tell you exactly where to get the kernel-source package from, so I'll tell you.

It should be on your install disks. If it is not then it will be in the "Main" repository (I am assuming you have urpmi configured)

To find which kernel you are using, open a terminal and type uname -r and press enter. It will show you your kernel version e.g 2.6.8.1-12mdk
You then need to install the package kernel-source2.6.8.1-12mdk (the version number will probably be different for you depending on which version of Mandriva you are using)

Ok hope this helps
