For starters I would like to say that over the years this set of forums has been extremely helpful. It has been greatly appreciated.

Here is the problem I am encountering. With two different sound cards, one is on board the motherboard. The one that is an actual card is a soundblaster AWE64 that has worked flawlessly with Mandy for years. The on board one is according to linux: Cirrus CS4610/1 CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio. I double checked this by looking at the sound card chip on the motherboard.

Either one of them I can config but when I try to use a mixer such as KMix, 2006 Powerpack says no mixer found. With the Soundblaster I tried both alsaconf and sndconfig, neither detect it as with 2005 or prior, but if I manually choose the sb using sndconfig to configure it no problem. I have to choose irq's and such but it sorta works. The linus sound clip comes up during the test, but still it says no mixer found. I can hear my TV card when I used it as a sh*ts and giggles test.

The on board one is detected by Mandy and the module was loaded no problem and same story no mixer found, so I then tried alsa and still the same. With OSS nothing is tripped as a fail during boot, but with alsa drivers there is a failed during alsa loading. I will update this with the exact error wn by this card and alsa.

Oh it might help to know that both cards' setup was attempted on a fresh install

Do you really need both cards? If you do not, then disable the onboard soundcard and this will save you a lot of grief.

Oh no I am only running one of the sound cards at a time. I am just encountering the same problem with each of them basically. Originally the on board sound was disabled and the soundblaster was what i had been using in this system and for years with linux in the system it replaced. Last weekend I reinstalled the system fresh from the club's limited edition of 2005 to 2006 powerpack. I ran alsaconf to bring up the soundblaster, it couldn't detect the card or give me the option in its cards list for the AWE 32/64 cards. I then tried sndconfig it couldn't detect the card either and I just manually chose it used the defaults for interrupts, etc. It played the linus torvolds test sound file, said it was successful, and I figured it was till I opened Kmix again, still no mixer. I was like hmmm WTF.

I decided to then wipe the system and try fresh with the on board sound after making sure it was supported. Still them same problem.

I hope this clears up any mis conceptions of me trying to run 2 cards at the same time.

I have sound in madriva 2006 Pro bundle with almost everything. but I recently installed Starcraft using winetools and the game has no sound. I am using the default linux sound configuration because if I change it in settings to my actual sound card = NO SOUND at all..

anyone found a fix for this?

Start a new thread in the Mandriva forum so that you question gets more exposure. Its not really related to the original question.

Have you tried using Mandrivas own soundcard tool? Did you try restarting alsa or rebooting once you have configured your soundcard. Also did you try running "alsamixer" instead of kmix?

Yep, I tried all of the above. when I try alsamixer it tries to load then nothing. It is just really frustrating seeing I have never really had any problems before in previous versions of Mandriva or Mandrake. The system in question was running 2005 till I decided to reinstall and now I think I am going back till another release is made available or this problem gets solved in the very near future.

Mandriva 2006 should install your sound drivers automatically, are you saying nothing works? Are your speakers connected?

Yes my speakers are connected, the volume is up, I AM NOT a simpleton or a NOOB! If you read my original post and subsequent ones in this thread you would have seen I am getting a no mixer found error on hardware supported that I never had issue with. I stated how with the Soundblaster AWE64 I could only use sndconfig, it didn't find it manually as it did in prior releases. I then was able to manually congure it get the Linus Torvalds test sound file and it says it is correctly configured, go into X still no mixer found. I can then say open tvtime and hear the tv but cab't control any volume. I then reboot and can't even hear tvtime coming through the card. Before the reboot any sounds that aren't passed through the sound card like a TV card I can't hear either.

On the note of the on baord sound (This is after a reinstall) Mandriva detects it and supposedly has it set up but still no mixer found. Check for sound and nothing. I then try reconfiguring using Mandriva control panel nothing towards a resolution with that one. Still no mixer found. I then try alsaconf, it says it has been configured but still the same boat of no mixer found.

Trust me I am here because I have tried all the means and even researched it. I am sorry I snapped on what you said dolphans1 but it was like asking are you a moron who don't know to check simple thing. It was a reinstall. All of the cables never were moved when the SoundBlaster was in and when I switched to the on board sound I literally tripple checked to make sure I had the right cables connected to the right jacks.

I have also just done a clean install of Mandriva 2006 on a machine which previously ran 2005 with no sound problems.

I also have a PCI sound card which I use instead of the on board sound (an ALS4000). No new hardware or configuration since the previous version of Mandriva, yet although all mixers show fully operational, and 'Enable Sound System' is checked in KDE preferences, I get no sound at all. (and yes I do have the speakers plugged into the correct socket).

I am interested to know how you work out with this since it may help me too. :-)

Noticed on another thread the guy had no sound since new install but hadnt switched machine off for 2/3 days. When he did he suddenly got sound

Thanks but I have restarted many times since the install which was a week or two back.

I ran alsaconf this evening and could only get sound (of sorts) from the onboard Ensoniq sound chip.
Alsa mixer shows everything on that should be and at full volume,yet I can barely hear the result. This is not how it used to be when I had 2005 running on this same machine. I don't understand why it is sooo different this time.

CURIOUS -- I had the same problem as J CHANCE. Is a fix in on this yet or still no sounds out there? Totally frustrating.

Check your sliders in KMIX and make sure PCM is all the way up or close.

Thanks Dolphans, but I had already checked KMix, AuMix, Alsa Mixer and all, and all sliders way up full.

I'm sorry to say I never did find out what the problem was, so in the end I wimped out and installed SuSE 10.0 and have had sound without any problems since then.

As a sidebar, I am now able to use my Wacom Graphire 3 right from the start, which I could never get to run properly in Mandriva either.

I have made no changes in my hardware or the partition setup. It all just works now.

I still like Mandriva, but for now SuSE is where I am.

I would like to thank all those who have offered suggestions and advice. :-)
