No sound in Mandrake

Since this is my first post, let me say hello to everyone here.

I have just installed Mandrake 10.1. During the installation it didn't recognize my sound settings, so I just left it as it was because I didn't want to mess anything up. This is my first time working with Linux. Now that it is installed I have no sound. System configuration says that my sound is an unknown device. Please help me to fix this, thanks in advance. If you need to know any other info let me know and I'll post it.

Click on Kicker (Start) > Multimedia > Sound > Kmix

Now click on the 'advanced' box at the bottom and you will see a lot of little LED type functions to click on and off. While your sound is playing, click things like line-in on and off (that's the one that did it for me - it worked when it went dark). You should get a rise somewhere in there.

If that doesn't do it, there are more sound settings in "Kicker > System > Configuration >Configure Your Desktop" under Sound.

Open up the mandrake control centre and then see if sound if loaded under the services section. If not try starting this and see what happens - do not select start at boot if you are having issues as this could casue issues when you boot (at least it did with me until I had things corrected).

What sound card do you have?

It's my on board sound (Chipset is Intel 915g and ICH6). The service is loaded, when I go to kmix there is no "advanced" button anywhere. In the "configure you desktop" section I set my hardware to default, and when I clicked apply I got this message:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Anymore Ideas?

Get the latest OSS drivers from http://www.opensound.com/download.cgi

I had some problems with sound in Quake 3 and those drivers did the trick.

They are easy to install but require the kernel-source package, which you can obtain from:

type in console, as root : alsaconf

that should do the trick .

Don't use OSS as mentionned, ALSA is much better.

I tried to run the command but it said "command not found." I guess i'll hold off on downloading OSS like you said. If it helps, I have determined that I am missing the file dev/dsp.

The OSS installation will create all that.

But the problem may be your ALSA. Goto Kicker -> System -> Packaging -> Install Software and search for ALSA and make sure it's installed properly. Then run alsaconf

And I do agree, ALSA is better but with my Quake situation OSS was my only alternative.

Well that made it run, but it still doesn't detect a supported sound card.
