no sound in Mandrake 10.1 playing mp3's
As the subject states, I cannot get any sound playing mp3 files with Xmms, Amorok, or any other media device. XMMS appears to be playing the files but not outputting any sound. In the
menu listing for XMMS I edited out the "soundwrapper" part of the command and tried running the device. Result was no sound . I checked the menu listings again for XMMs and the system had put an additional XMMS listing in the menu. No matter how many times I edit the XMMS entry there is always another entry added with soundwrapper in the command line. I don't know if this has anything to do with the no sound problem but the last time I installed MDK 10.1 it worked. I know that my soundcard and speakers work because I can play CD's using XMMS on the system. I have changed soundcard drivers and also ALSA drivers to OSS and ARTS in XMMS but nothing seems to work. I have checked the settiings with ALSA mixer and KMIXer and everything seems ok(Nothing muted). If any of you happen to know how to solve this headache I would certainly appreciate your assistance. Also the soundcard is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz with a Cirrus Logic CS4297A. Chuck Parker |
Have you tried to play mp3's in console?
|
From my previous experience, you can play music from a cd because Linux uses the small wire connected from the player to your motherboard/sound card.
You probably don't have your modules set properly. Please, paste here output of following command lines lsmod dmesg Thanks |

Your module should be snd-cs46xx. ( check please, your sound card is not listed in my old Alsa documentation )
What are your modules ?? ( /etc/modules.conf or modprobre/modules ) Please paste here your modules. You should have sound as soon as dmesg will show : found -your sound card - at xx |
Your module should be snd-cs46xx. ( check please, your sound card is not listed in my old Alsa documentation )
My sound driver is snd-cs46xx. What are your modules ?? ( /etc/modules.conf or modprobre/modules ) There are no modules listed in /etc/modules. I am also posting modprobe.conf as it could be helpful: # This file is autogenerated from /etc/modules.conf using generate-modprobe.conf command remove snd-cs46xx /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-cs46xx install snd-cs46xx /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-cs46xx && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; } alias eth0 3c59x alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs46xx install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /bin/true remove cs46xx /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove cs46xx install cs46xx /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install cs46xx Please paste here your modules. No modules. /etc/modules.conf. is blank. You should have sound as soon as dmesg will show : found -your sound card - at xx Chuck Parker |
Sorry, this is the right file... name was changed recently.
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs46xx - this is your sound module - Try the following command : modprobe snd-cs46xx Advise if any message from console. |
Bibilit
I tried the command modprobe snd-cs46xx at the command line as you suggested . There were no messages. Chuck |
Ok chuck,
When you says there were no messages probably means you won't get any error message. getting no message in reply, simply means everything is ok. These are the modules for your sound card, you should copy and paste those to /etc/modules.conf ... then save the file - hence you should be Root - # ALSA portion alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-cs46xx # module options should go here # OSS/Free portion alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 # card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss Log out then in and let me know if you see any change. Remember, Alsa set everything mute by default. If there is any change dmesg should show " found soundcard at " |
Bibilit,
I copied and pasted the modules you listed in your last post to /etc/modules.conf as you directed. I am sorry to say there was no change. I did a dmesg but there was no " found soundcard at" in it. Chuck |
Hi,
Is there any change in dmesg in any way ( some new lines ?? ) Did you try to shut down the computer, and restart ? Also, did you save the /etc/modules.conf being Root ? ( can you open the file and get the pasted file ) Have you got sound when Root ? try the following commands modprobe snd-cs46xx modprobe snd-pcm-oss modprobe snd-mixer-oss modprobe snd-seq-oss you should be returned to the prompt each and every time ! try then command line : alsaconf Let me know |
A OK ! bibilit
I ran the modprobes as you directed with no messages. I then ran alsaconf and got sound. Thank you very much for your help. I intend to keep my notes on this problem since it may happen again sometime. Once again, thanks. Chuck |
Happy to hear about it !
This the magic point with Linux |
Sound stopped working for me too and I tried everything for days without any improvement. Alsaconf made sound work in 5 seconds! :) Thank you! :)
