Question Mythtv is whiping me good.

Mandriva 2.6.22.12-desktop-1mdv 2008.0 x86_64
Hauppage PVR-500
Mythtv version 0.20.2-14486.1plf2008.0@x86_64
ASUS-MN2NPV-VM mobo with on board
nVidia Corporation C51PV [GeForce 6150] (rev a2)
nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416) MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416) MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+
4GB Corsair CM2X1024-6400PRO DDR@-800 RAM

Got Mythtv almost all the way working but no Live TV. I can record and playback recording. From log files I suspect it is a file issue. How to fix?

Can anyone help me figure this out? I suspect the problem is here:
Code:
RingBuf(/var/lib/mythtv/recordings//4294967295_20080114154846.mpg): Invalid file (fd -1) when opening '/var/lib/mythtv/recordings//4294967295_20080114154846.mpg'.
Is Mythtv asking for the correct file? If it is why isn't it there?

can you post the ivtv section of dmesg?

Also check the (I don't know the correct wording) the user rights/restrictions on all the folders and files that mythtv wants to access, in about 80% of all cases that is the reason for the weirdest problems.

i) Those paths have an extra slash in them. Go to the configuration and remove the slash from the end of the path for the recordings folder (if it's there).

ii) If the frontend is running on the same box as the backend, it defaults to accessing the files through the filesystem. You can configure it to stream the files from the backend instead though. The backend is obviously working properly as you are recording sucessfully, so you may find this works (although it eats more system resources).

iii) As the previous poster mentioned, it may be a permissions issue ; the frontend process may be running as a different user to the backend, and they may have different permissions on the recordings folder.

Thanks for the reply. I solved the no live tv problem by changing the orderof:
/dev/v4l/video0
/dev/v4l/video1
to
/dev/v4l/video1
/dev/v4l/video0
in mythtv-setup.

Three issues remain:
1. mythbackend won't start at boot
2. No audio
3. Only one tuner works on dual tuner PVR-500 card. Card has worked properly in Mythtv in other distros.

1. mythbackend won't start at boot - because of:
Code:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
I can get around that by:
Code:
# chmod 666 /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
but I have to do that every time I reboot.

2. No audio - KDE Control Center>Sound and Multimedia>Sound System>Hardware is set to ALSA and full duplex. Could it be as simple as a setting in KMix or should I set it up with ALSA?
Code:
$ mythfrontend

But I don't what it's trying to tell me. I know permissions, ownership, file paths, and file names are issues here as Mandriva seems to have changed since Mythtv documentation was written. Embarrassingly I don't know how to check for them I just try to deal with them as I come across them, could use some manual time on this. Maybe someone will be kind enough to recommend a manual section...

See updated hardware and Mythtv version in 1st post.

The backend is obviously working properly as you are recording sucessfully, so you may find this works (although it eats more system resources).

iii) As the previous poster mentioned, it may be a permissions issue ; the frontend process may be running as a different user to the backend, and they may have different permissions on the recordings folder.
Your refering to '/var/lib/mythtv/recordings//4294967295_20080114154846.mpg'. When I figure out which configuration file to change, [and I am looking] I'll do that. Thanks.

That would be in mythtv-setup where you set the paths. It's set in the database so you won't find a configuration file.

I see that you already found the mythtv forum http://www.mythtvtalk.com/forum/
there is also a very active mailing list that you can easily search with Gossamer Threads, you'll find the real experts there. I remember seeing something there recentla about the pvr500 and only one tuner working. Happy searching!

Some other things:
Regarding order of video0 and video1: there is a nasty problem of these things getting swapped around by udev on booting. That can be solved by blacklisting the modules from udev. Just so you are aware of it.

I think your backend problem is caused by mysql not having started when myth tries to access it.
Probably permissions or ownership again.
I solve these problems with a hearty
Code:
chown -R mythtv.mythtv /path/folder
as explained here:
chown - LQ Wiki
Works all the time.

Audio: I don't know how Mandriva handles this but maybe you need the alsa-utils. Have you done everything described here: Mythtv documentation?

Good luck!

barbex thanks. I'm working the http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/
and searching the LQ wiki to find answers.

One possible problem with audio may be:
Code:
# cat /dev/urandom >/dev/dsp
-bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
# cat /dev/urandom >/dev/dsp
-bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
# killall artsd
# cat /dev/urandom >/dev/dsp
-bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
How can I get whatever is grabbing '/dev/dsp' to stop?

Progress report. Some movement on 1st 2 problems. I haven't started with #3 yet.

1. mythbackend won't start at boot - because of:
Code:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
Code:
# chmod 666 /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

# chown -R mythtv.mythtv /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

# chmod a+x /etc/rc.d/init.d/mythbackend

# chkconfig --level 345 mythbackend on

# /sbin/service mythbackend status
mythbackend dead but pid file exists
# /sbin/service mysqld status
#                                             [  OK  ]
However in Mandriva control center>System>Manage System Services mythbackend is listed as running it is mysqld that is stopped. This right after fresh boot or reboot. Both are set to start on boot.

Now when I reboot this will get mythbackend WORKING properly:

Code:
# /sbin/service mythbackend status
mythbackend dead but pid file exists
# /sbin/service mythbackend start
Starting mythbackend:                                           [  OK  ]
# /sbin/service mythbackend restart
Stopping mythbackend:                                           [  OK  ]
Starting mythbackend:                                           [  OK  ]
# /sbin/service mythbackend status
mythbackend (pid 5569) is running...
Oh how I wish it would do this automatically. Is it possible that something isn't being done in correct sequence?

2. No audio - KDE Control Center>Sound and Multimedia>Sound System>Hardware is set to ALSA and full duplex. Could it be as simple as a setting in KMix or should I set it up with ALSA?

Code:
$ mixer set PCM,0 77%,77% unmute
bash: mixer: command not found
$ amixer set PCM,0 77%,77% unmute
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [on]
$ amixer set Line,0 77%,77% mute captur
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Capture [on]
  Front Left: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [off]
$ amixer set Capture,0 77%,77% captur
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
  Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 15
  Front Left: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]

# killall artsd
After I reboot and take care or problem #1 and try to watch tv no sound.

Code:
# killall artsd
Try to watch tv again and I have sound! If I move '/usr/bin/artsd' to '/usr/bin/artsd.old' I don't have to run 'killall artsd' but I also have no sound in KDE. That just isn't right. By the way, why is KDE still using artsd??? Is their a way to get it to use something else? Is there a way to get artsd to stop grabbing /dev/dsp? Seems like if you did you still wouldn't have sound in KDE?

I think you should start to get mysql to run on startup, check the logs in /var/log/ for errors.
Then you might have to go into a KDE Forum for your Audio Problems or drop KDE completely, it is unnecessary for a mythtv box anyway.

I only have one computer so it has to function as a desktop but I also use it to record tv. KDE is my preferred desktop and Mandriva and Sabayon are my preferred distros. I got audio to work in both Mythtv and KDE by 1st:

2. No audio
Code:
$ amixer set PCM,0 77%,77% unmute
bash: mixer: command not found
$ amixer set PCM,0 77%,77% unmute
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [on]
$ amixer set Line,0 77%,77% mute captur
Simple mixer control 'Line',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Capture [on]
  Front Left: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 24 [77%] [1.50dB] [off]
$ amixer set Capture,0 77%,77% captur
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
  Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 15
  Front Left: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]

# killall artsd

But artsd starts again when you reboot so:

Code:
mv /usr/bin/artsd /usr/bin/artsd.old
After removing artsd you have no sound in KDE until you go to KDE Control Center>Sound and Multimedia>System Notifications>Player Settings. There deselect KDE Player and select other. I then entered /usr/bin/mplayer. Then next time you reboot you'll get a knotify notice asking if you want to disable artsd. Select disable artsd. Now I have sound in Mythtv and KDE.

3. Only one tuner works on dual tuner PVR-500 card. Card has worked properly in Mythtv in other distros.
The tuner not working is hopefully being dealt with here:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/list...=unread#unread
and here:

http://www.mythtvtalk.com/forum/view...?p=28231#28231

1. mythbackend won't start at boot
Now to the mythbackend not starting at boot. I've taken these steps to address this issue:

Code:
# chmod 666 /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

# chown -R mythtv.mythtv /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

After most recent boot in Mandriva Control Center both mysqld and mythbackend are shown as running and both are selected to start at boot. However I get this from command line:

I've been led to wonder if editing something in '/etc/my.cnf' might fix this but no one seems to know what. I've looked in many config and startup files but haven't found anything. I believe what is needed here is to get mythbackend to call for mysql at port 3306 instead of socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' but I don't know [yet] how to do this. It has been said that commenting out 'skip-networking' in '/etc/my.cnf' would accomplish this but it isn't working that way for me. I need some one more proficient at Linux to help me here. Or is this a bug?

/etc/my.cnf:
Code:
# The following options will be passed to all MySQL clients
[client]
user            = root
port            = 3306
socket          = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

This looks like mysql is either not running or mythtv does not have the right password to access. Anything in the mysql logs?
There is a file in /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt that contains your password and that has to correspond to the user set in the database. A bit confusing, I know.

A clean reinstall of Mysql might help.

nano /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt is empty.

nano ~/.mythtv/mysql.txt
Code:
DBHostName=localhost
DBUserName=mythtv
DBPassword=mythtv
DBName=mythconverg
DBType=QMYSQL3

well then, I'm sorry, I got nothing.

Well one last thing. I removed mysql then installed if with urpmi. At the end of urpmi run it gave this:

[HTML]The initscript used to start mysql has been reverted to use the one shipped
by MySQL AB. This means the following changes:

* The MYSQLD_OPTIONS="--skip-networking" option in the /etc/sysconfig/mysqld
file has been removed, this is now set in the /etc/my.cnf file.

* The MySQL Instance Manager is used by default, set use_mysqld_safe="1" in
the /etc/sysconfig/mysqld file to use the old mysqld_safe script.

The extra MySQL-NDB server package has been merged into the MySQL-Max package
and ndb related pieces has been split into different sub packages as done by
MySQL AB. The MySQL libraries and the MySQL-common sub package uses the
MySQL-Max build so that no functionality required by for example the NDB
parts are lost.

The MySQL-common package now ships with a default /etc/my.cnf file that is
based on the my-medium.cnf file that comes with the source code. The
/etc/my.cnf file is constructed at build time of this package.

To connect to the Instance Manager you need to pass the correct command line
options like in the following examples:

* mysql -u root --password=my_password --port=2273 --protocol=TCP
* mysql -u root --password=my_password --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysqlmanager.sock

Please note you also need to add a user in the /etc/mysqlmanager.passwd file and
make sure the file is owned by the user under which the Instance Manager service
is running under.[/HTML]

But I get this:

Code:
# mysql -u root --password=my_password --port=2273 --protocol=TCP
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied. Bad username/password pair
Yet I'm pretty sure I know what my mysql password is because:

Code:
# mysql -u root --password
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 40
Server version: 5.0.45 Mandriva Linux - MySQL Standard Edition (GPL)

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> exit;
Bye
/etc/mysqlmanager.passwd is currently empty. What the *&%$@??? Help!!!

I did not read all the posts, but if you did not get the sound issue fixed, go into the KDE Control Center and navigate to Sound and Multimedia > Sound System. By default in Mandriva, Auto-suspend is set to 50 seconds, but I find it to work much better when set to 1 second. This way, dsp is released one second after KDE is finished with it so it is available for other programs. I do not use MythTV here, but hopefully this solution will be of help to you,
