I just did a clean install of Mandrake 9.2, downloaded the updates, and finally got the menus and desktop back to normal. Now I discover there is no more supersuser filemanager option in the menus! This is unacceptable, IMO. If I can't figure a way to get this back in the 9.2 version, I might leave Mandrake. This is an extremely useful feature, that I've used since the beginning with MDK. I used to just drag the icon to the panel for quick and always available access- this was very handy and quick. Now I have to open a konsole, su to root, and type konqueror, then wait to get another filemanager window to open as root. Before, it was click the panel icon, type password, boom. What is Mandrake thinking in removing this feature?
I've been using Gentoo for the last three months on 3 different boxes instead of 9.1, having a great time with every new 2.6 kernel test, and learning a lot while I waited for 9.2. It's not like I want to leave Mandrake, and I'd really like to work with 9.2 for awhile to see how it compares with Gentoo.
There must be a way to do this, but it escapes me at the moment. Any ideas out there as to how this can be done?
Another pi$$ed customer. I have already went back to 9.1.
Here is how to make a link to the file.
Right click on the desktop and select Create New then Link to Application. In the new window type in File Manager - Super User for the name. You can change the icon if you want to have the file cabinet thingy. Then click the Execute tab and then clcik the bowse button. Hit the up arrow button until you get to the top and then click usr then bin then konqueror and OK button. Put a x in the box for 'run as different user' and fill in root. Click OK.
The icon is under applications and is named 'kfm'.
You can drag the icon to the panel if you want to.
Hope that helps. Remember it will ask for the root password and you will have root access.
Many thanks, dalek! I really appreciate this info. I probably would have eventually stumbled on it, but you certainly saved me a lot of time. This was my last gripe about 9.2 vs 9.1, so I'm pretty satisfied (except, of course being on dialup, and having to immediately get all those 9.2 updates). Now to give 9.2 a good shaking out, and evaluate as compared to my finely tuned Gentoo installs.
I do usually do a lot of rebuilding of core Mandrake and application srpms for Athlon-xp with more optimized flags, and run 2.6 kernels, so I'll have to get into that again, and reserve judgement for a few weeks.
