Newbie Needs help installing Gnome 2.6 On Mandrake 10

hi all, im a compleate newbie, i have just been useing Mdk 10 for about 3 days, i have repetedly tried to install gnome 2.6, i have got it to work some what but all the icons are all messed up, and i keep on getting this stupid error . and it likes to crash alot.

X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
40300001
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using simpler configuration or taking more fresh version of XFree software.
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

I also tried upgrade Xfree86 to 4.4.0 and well I and It Messed up badly

now i have deleted every thing and did a fresh install of mandrake 10.
So is there any one who has gotton 2.6 working on MDK 10 that would be willing to help me out installing Gnome 2.6 and maybe Xfree86 4.4.0, any hel would be grately appreciated. Cheers all.

try using garnome.
It is a script that downloads the sources for gnome 2.6 then compiles them for you.
Works pretty well if you follow the instructions and have a fast broadband connection.

OR, and this is what I did, use the easy urpmi page and add the devel (cooker) repositories to urpmi.
download the packages you need that way.

if you are REALLY feeling brave, you can update to cooker completely
update urpmi first by doing ( as root) urpmi urpmi to upgrade the urpmi program itself.

THEN do urpmi --auto-select and your system will update itself to cooker. Cooker is pretty cool but it has it's quirks. I don't recommend it to a linux newbie.

Right now the mirrors are not in sync. You definitely don't want to upgrade anything from cooker.
