newbie can't shutdown mandrake

hi

i've installed mandrake 10.0 on my pc but i couldn't shutdown the machine, either from gnome or kde. i chose shutdown from the menu, it displays shutdown in progress, but after a while, the machine just halted. and when i press power button on the machine, there's no response either. so i have to reset the machine then press power button to turn the machine off.

i logged in as 'root'

try opening a console and typing the following:
Code:
poweroff -h
or as root:
Code:
shutdown -h now

Use the Mandrake Control Centre to (hopefully) enable it. Open Boot Loader under the Boot section.

On the first Config screen that appears there should be checkboxes with Enable ACPI and Force No Local APIC. Mark both of these boxes, click Next and then click Finish. When you get returned to the Boot Options screen in the control Centre, close it and restart your computer, then try shutdown -h now and see what happens.

tried above

same

can't shutdown

the 'shut down system' progress bar approaches to the end, then machine halted

maybe i should give more info about my machine's specs:
Dell dimension 600Mhz/192M RAM/40G + 10G HDD
windows XP / Mandrake 10.0 dual boot
windows XP on hard drive #1 (40G), mandrake 10.0 on hard drive #2 (10G)

i just migrated my linux from RedHat Linux 9.0 to Mandrake 10.0, what i did is basically let mandrake wipe out everything (partitions etc) on10 G harddrive and install itself on it. master boot record is on hda, which is the 40G master harddrive. what i'm concerned is that my old redhat linux 9.0 boot record still existed in MBR even though i have repartitioned my 10G harddrive during mandrake installation, but i don't know how to check MBR to make sure the old redhat boot record is gone

Shutdown can be a problem on some older boxes - like my P3-700... I have apm enabled for the kernel compile to get it to turn off...

i remember i have similar shutdown problem in Redhat 7.2 a while ago, then someone instructed me to change sth, also APM related, to have shutdown feature working.

how to compile APM feature into Mandrake's Kernel? is it not included by default? it's not reasonable that Mandrake failed me on this little detail while i'm satisfied on almost everything else it provides.

I had the same problem, and finally solved it.
Open the boot loader and check only the box at Enable ACPI .
Did it work for you?
