Newb,GAIM SETUP and XINE,GNOME INSTALL QUESTIONS

How do I setup an account in gaim?Is this the app that will let me instant message people with aim or do i have to download aim for linux first?
Also how do I go about installing Xine and Gnome?I run rpmdrake and search for gnome which brings it up,but after I check the boxes I cant select install, same withxine.Do I have to access rpmdrake as root user?If so how do I do this?

for the rpmdrake-
su
passwd
rpmdrake

the best thing to do for mandrake for your packages is to set up urpmi. this is a mirror setup that will grab the newest packages, and update your system with a couple of commands.

the thing to do is to install urpmi.setup, either from your disks or from rpm.bone.net. from rpmbone make sure that you grab the one for 10 and not one of the others.

at the command line-
urpmi.setup

a gui will come up on your screen select a couple of mirrors for the updates, main, and contribs. then vailidate them. once this is done, the validate will take a while, it's getting all of the information from the mirrors. once that is done then-
urpmi.update -a
urpmi --auto-select

this will grab all of the newest apps that you have on your system and update it for you. most of the time they are updates to remove bugs or a security update.

once you are done with the update, or before even, you can get rid off your disks to install from. then when you want something installed-
urpmi -y packagename

the -y will query all of the packages that contain that name so that you can get what you want/need. then-
urpmi packagename-whatever

and it will grab the deps for it, and your set.

if your on dial up, this will take a little bit longer, especially with the validate, but it will also make sure that eveything is upto date.

cheers.

edit: sorry grab the one for the version of mdk that your running.

and no your don't have to get aim for linux. if you have an aim account all ready, then just use that. if not get one from either netscape or aim.

cheers.
