New Mandriva install on Laptop

New install of Mandriva 2008 on a Compaq 2100 laptop.
All went well, no problems.
Shut down and on restart, boot up gets to
ALSA driver (v 1.0.14)is already running. Doing alsactl [OK] mixer setting

and hangs. Only way out is to restart.

Any ideas on where to start to solve this problem?

TIA

Could it be that you are loading both kernel drivers and the external alsa-driver package?

After rebooting 4 times it finally booted up only to put me in an 'Enter User Name/Password' loop.
I'm in process of reinstalling now.

Thanks for replying.
Hopefully it'll work this time.

Thanks again.

Yep, sounds like you should try a reinstall... You may have a media error of sorts if strange error keeps appearing/disappearing. Also, have you checked your ram? (memtest86)

Reinstall went okay.
Now I need to create a network without a windows box.
I'm searching for directions on Google now.

Thanks for the help guys.
