Need SMTP server!

Hey guys i am totaly lost here!

Im trying to be able to send mail via my forums using smtp, but i cant seem to really understand it.

I tried using some free online smtp servers, which did not work. I just finished installing qmail but i am totaly confused now.

Does anyone here have a quick overlook on how i can get it to work?
