the whole "chooser/GLX/nvidia kernel" thing is outdated.
They have a binary you can run at
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-4496.html
so, follow these steps:
1) exit x (the graphical environment). if you have x on autostart, hit
ctrl-alt-f1, login as root, and type "init 3." If you don't have x on
autostart, just logout of your window manager.
2) become root; either you just logged in as root in step 1, or by using "su".
3) do "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run"
4) follow the directions, it will install it for you, and will even modify your XF86Config-4 file for you.
5) make sure that your configuration file has driver "nvidia" instead of driver "nv"
make sure your modules section has "load glx"
but NOT load "dri"
The installer should have taken care of all that, just check.
6) restart x (type init 5 if x is autostart, or just startx otherwise...or just reboot. whatever)
If you messed up your XF86Config-4, see if there's a backup (XF86Config-4~, for example, or XF86Config-4.bak, or something)
