My internet apps cannot detect my internet connection

Good day, I’m new to the Linux world and I am falling in love with it everyday! Anyway, I have installed Mandrake 9.1 and the installation was flawless. I created a dial-up connection and after encountering some errors, I was finally able to connect to my ISP but my internet apps cannot detect my connection to the internet and it tells me that the site cannot be found. Can anybody lend me a hand please? I would appreciate it if you could explain it to me in a new-to-Linux-and-knows-nothing-about-its-terminology-yet way.

Thank you so much in advance!!!

emacs /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ip address of your DNS server)

ctrl-s,ctrl-x

What does that mean? It means you've got no name resolving. That's let's your box know what it is.

check to see if you have a firewall (Shorewall) running. in terminal as root type.......... service shorewall stop. if it was running, that will stop it. then try to connect.

Thoreau and otish1000c: I'm sorry but i dont follow your discussion, is this in relation to my thread?

i was just having you check if the native MDK firewall was running, there by blocking your internet access. the firewall is called Shorewall & i don't remember id Mandrake installs it & sets it up to start at boot by default. to check on that, open up a terminal (or Konsole), & go to root mode. to do that, at the prompt type su (hit enter) then type the root pasword (hit enter). then, so stop the firewall (if it is indeed running) type service shorewall stop (hit enter) if it was running, it will tell that it is now stopping & stop. if it wasn't running, it will tell you that too. if that isn't your problem, then i run the dial-up set up wizard again & check all of your entries closely, especially the dns server info.

Thanks otis, I will try it as soon as possible and i will let you know :) but in case it doesn't work, are there any possible solution aside from running the dial-up wizard again?
