Mplayer, mencoder and libmp3lame

While trying to extract audio from an avi and convert it into an mp3 (from ac3) using mencoder (from MPlayer-1.0pre7), I hit a problem. Among my output was:
MPlayer was compiled without libmp3lame support

Yet "locate libmp3lame" returns:
/usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0
/usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0

And, "rpm -qa | grep mp3" returns:
liblame0-3.96.1-1plf
lame-3.96.1-1plf

So I thought, "Fine, let's recompile," and yet "./configure" returned:
Checking for libmp3lame (for mencoder) ... no

I have heard of a libmp3lame rpm, but haven't been able to track it down. The same goes for source. Can anyone tell me where to find this package, or how to get mplayer properly compiled.

Distro: Mandrake 10.1OE

The package 'liblame0-3.96.1-1plf' that you have installed already is the libmp3lame RPM. If you want to compile mplayer against it then you need to install liblame0-devel as well.

However you'll probably find that the mplayer that's in the PLF repo already has MP3 encoding support compiled in. To make sure you get the PLF version uninstall your existing mplayer
Code:
rpm -e mplayer
and then reinstall like this
Code:
urpmi --media plf-free,plf-nonfree mplayer

Thanks for your reply.

It happens that I do have urpmi installed and configured. I just prefer compiling my own packages, or, if I am going to use an rpm, doing my own dependency hunting. But to get to the point, I did fall back on urpmi after posting here. It installed mplayer (pre7 from plf). I still received the same error message about mplayer's compilation.

I'd be willing to bet, however, that you've hit on the solution when you recommend installing the -devel package. I'll try it out today and post the outcome here. Thanks again.

... yeah, it's looking good; ./configure has detected libmp3lame for mencoder.

Yep, that's the most important thing to remember when compiling software - install the -devel package for whatever it complains it needs.

MPlayer install issue

Hello,
Ok, I installed the libmp3lame, mplayer1, mplayer codecs, and second codecs esential, now when try to install teh Mpalyer Gui, I get the error, that it's missing the skins, so I try to install the skins, and I get the error missing Mplayer Gui, so, how the heck do I get one of them (actually both) to install? I installed the other because according to the errors I need them first. or so I think I figured out.

I great program for extracting audio from a video file is Avidemux2, it`s also good at re-encoding, and basic editing.
