Mozilla Firefox under Mandriva 2008

Hi there,
I have got a problem using Mozilla Firefox (tried Netscape as well with the same result) under Mandriva 2008. I have Bigpond ADSL connection and it works perfectly for base KDE browser - Konqueror. But when I try to open any webpage with Mozilla Firefox it looks like it cannot connect to the Internet at all. Another thing I noted that this works only if I open for example google.com in Konqueror then close it and then open the same site in Mozilla. Under MS Windows everything works perfectly. Any clues why that happens?
Many thanks.

I write this using Firefox 2.0.0.11 on Mandriva Linux 2008.0, and my system is old and seriously underpowered by current standards (AMD 350 Mhz powered Presario with 256MB RAM) so Firefox works well in Mandriva Linux. Do you get any errors from Firefox? Are you using a proxy server? If Konqueror is working and Firefox is not, I suggest you investigate the Firefox configuration. Did you install Firefox from the Mandriva package(s)? If not, try doing so (install using the Mandriva Package Manager). If none of this points you in the direction of a solution, post back with more complete information and we will try to be of greater help.

Thanks for reply. Sorry but I have been away for some time. I have checked Firefox configuration, it is pretty the same as in Conqueror. I have the direct connection to the Internet, no scripts, no proxies. The Firefox was installed from Mandriva package using urpmi and there is no any error just timeout. It looks for me like a host name resolution problem. Once I have typed host IP address instead the name it works. I did not change any settings for that matter after installation, just set up a firewall. But it should not affect because the Conqueror works perfectly.

How about you not use URPMI and just download the Firefox source? it runs directly without needing to compile or make. I just don't trust URPMI since some individual(s) package the softwares themselves. Always grab the source code yourself and make it.

Any package found on a Mandriva mirror has been qualified by the Mandriva development team. Packages in the contrib media source are provided by registered contributors (the operative word here is "registered"). Anonymous contributions are not permitted (for a variety reasons). All Mandriva packages are digitally signed by the packager(s) and both the Mandriva package manager (GUI) and urpmi (CLI) check for this signature. Both applications use the same media sources (repositories) which you can configure (or check). Installation from DVD, Mandriva One CD, or the three CD installation set results in initial media source configuration pointing to the installation disk(s). After initial installation it is recommended to configure Internet media sources to obtain access to the full range of software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux. The easiest method I know of for configuring these media sources is using Easy URPMI. Simply follow the directions on the WEB page. For further information you can read this article on my LQ blog.

Yesterday I tried to run the Firefox downloaded from official site. Result was the same - timeout error. However Conqueror works.

With Firefox closed, try removing .mozilla folder in your home directory then run Firefox again.

Firefox and Pidgin not connecting

I am also having problems connecting using firefox, and pidgin. Konqueror, amorok, and installing software works. I am running Mandriva 2008, installed Firefox 3.0.1 using the install software program.

I first had problems running firefox after a power outage. I uninstalled all versions of Firefox (2.0.16 that came with Mandriva and 3.0.1) I updated it with the install software. I reinstalled 3 and it worked for awhile but another power outage took firefox out again.

I have been trying to get pidgin to work since the first power outage but uninstalling it didn't work either.

I tried the .mozilla folder deletion and it didn't work either.

The symptoms - can't find the www address, but works OK with the 1.2.3.4 address - sounds like a DNS problem. Firefox isn't finding the DNS server.

I've never had the problem so can't offer a known solution, but look to see if there is any setting in your Firefox that mentions where to go for DNS.
