Mouse wheel works, but I can't click it - Mandrake 10.1

Okay, this has been a problem since I installed, and the subject pretty much says it all.

I can find a lot of messages about people who can't get their mouse wheel working at all, but that's not my problem. The thing works fine to scroll within pages, but I can't do anything with the middle button, and pasting with the middle button was always something I liked about X :(

Anybody have any ideas? I've tried a lot, but don't remember exactly what I did off the top of my head - in any case, nothing had any effect whatsoever.

Go into `drakconf' -> hardware -> mouse. Experiment with different mice. You should be able to get it to work. I had a problem where my mouse would only work when I told mdk to use 'Generic PS/2 mouse' instead of 'any ps/2 & usb mice'.

I also think there is a mouse tester in the same area.

Boy, drakconf is terrible :)

Using it caused crazy things to happen, and using the keyboard to choose cancel didn't really cancel, so I had to use a lot of tabbing with the keyboard to set it back. I've had problems with Mandrake's junk since I first installed 9.2. Amazing they haven't fixed that stuff yet in 10.1. I set my locale to Japan using LocaleDrake and suddenly I was in Australia. I set up two languages in the installer, English and Japanese, and the installation dialog ended up being in Spanish.

But I digress.

I just took a suggestion from another forum and booted Knoppix, then copied over the relevant section from Knoppix's XF86Config-4 and stuck them in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf (which on my computer is simply a link to /etc/X11/XF86Config - so really I modified XF86Config - is this normal?). Anyway, what works perfectly in Knoppix doesn't in Mandrake. The only difference now is that I can at least emulate a middle button, which is better than nothing, I guess, but I'd sure like to get that pesky wheel working.

Anybody else have any ideas? And please, no more suggestions to use drakconf, or harddrake, or reformatallpartitionsandlaughdrake, or anything like that.

edit: in case it's of any relevance at all (which I doubt, but I'll stick this in here anyway - maybe just as shameless advertising of my cool-looking mouse), I'm using a Japanese LOAS Sillfee MUS-CKT25BK mouse (page in Japanese though; sorry), and it's plugged into PS2 with an adapter.
