Maybe you need to change the resolution of the mouse.
You need edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
This is what my mouse section looks like:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Resolution" "800"
EndSection

Your's probably lacks the Resolution option, set it.
Also you can edit the mouse speed in the window manager/ Desktop you're using.
You can speed it up in KDE with the KDE control centre. ->peripherals->mouse.
That's how I made mine a nice speed.

All the adjustable parameters you need are in the section where redeye2 has pointed you to.
just click on the advanced tab up the top when you get there. It has pointer acceleration and all that type of stuff.

cheers
