Mouse doesn't work after installing 10.1
I really hate Microsoft and I really would love to change to Linux but there are major reasons why I can't. None of the Linux distributions and Live CDs I've tried have ever worked properly.
I just tried Mandrake 10.1 based on a rave review I read about it being easy for newbies and superb at hardware setup. But after installation the mouse didn't work! The cursor just sat there in the middle of the screen. On a Windows system I can navigate without a mouse using the keyboard, but on Mandrake I was stumped. No F1 to get help to tell me the keyboard combinations for activating menus. On a windows system Ctrl Esc will bring up the menu, but nothing I tried on Mandrake worked. So I had to cold boot the machine--not good. I noticed that, as Mandrake was booting, it identified a Logitech mouse (which is correct) but it simply didn't work at two attempts of booting into Mandrake, which is why I'm writing this in Windows.
Not a single one of the Linux distributions I've tried has ever got my Adaptec SCSI card working, nor my Creative Soundblaster 16 sound card. I know they're a bit old, but they're hardly obscure kit, surely? Each time I try a new distro I cross my fingers but it's always the same depressing result. It leads me to surmise that all Linux distros are actually very similar under the hood. I'm very busy and don't have much spare time, so sadly, I might have to give up my dreams of using Linux.
Bizarre PS! I just booted using the Mandrake Move Live CD and the mouse is working! Why is it that a Live CD should work hardware better than a 3 CD installation of the full distro? (Still no sound card or SCSI card though...)
